Carlos Cuba, 33, of West Springfield, and Khair Abdul-Raheem, 34, of East Longmeadow, were found guilty of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on Monday, Aug. 14, the Hampden County District Attorney announced Thursday. Abdul-Raheem was also found guilty of breaking and entering a vehicle in the daytime.
The crime-causing duo was accused of stabbing a 22-year-old on July 26, 2020. Springfield officers were called to Mercy Medical Center just after 6 p.m. when the man walked into the hospital with a knife wound.
He told investigators he'd gotten into an argument with three men on Worthington Street, and one of them stabbed him with a knife and ran away, the prosecutor said.
Police were able to track down Cuba and Abdul-Raheem through several surveillance camera videos and 911 calls. The two were arrested on Aug. 2, 2020, on an unrelated charge in Wilbraham after they allegedly broke into a home, the prosecutor said.
That case is still pending.
“We have no tolerance for senseless acts of violence in our community," said Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni in a news release about the conviction. "I thank the detectives from the Springfield Police Department for their very thorough and professional investigation, which brought these two defendants to justice. I also thank Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Schlemmer for his hard work and skilled prosecution of this case.”
A judge will sentence Cuba and Abdul-Raheem on the stabbing Friday.
